“We want to treat each person who comes with dignity and that’s why the stuff that we put out does not have stains on it, it does not smell or is torn,” Johns said.
She added it creates a good feeling on both sides, “My volunteers are very excited about giving out the items. And they’re very cheerful. And some times people don’t get a lot of smiles during their day, so we always like to give stuff out with a smile.”
If you’re interested in donating, Johns says they’re always in need of linens, socks, underwear and mens clothing. It’s located at 705 Garland in Flint.
(01/31/17) The center is lighter and brighter with new windows and lighting. The flooring and paint are all new, as well as these racks.
The renovations at the Carriage Town Ministries’s Charis Closet were made possible by grants from the community.
The community is also responsible for all of the items in the Center.
They’ve got clothing for men, women and children. You can also find all types of household items frames, cups, pots and pans. to noon.
The Carriage Town Ministries Director of Community Engagement, Cindy Johns, tells ABC12 News they see about 75 to 80 people shopping a day, giving away about 1300 items.
But Johns says she knows there are more people in need who could be taking advantage of this service.
It’s a service that’s been a strong staple in this community for decades.
“They just get so excited and we love to give it out. My volunteers are very excited about giving out the items and they are very cheerful and sometimes people don’t get a lot of smiles during their day and so we like to give stuff out with a smile,” Johns said.
