After deciding she wanted a career change, Ms Spillings opened Chix Clothing, in Long Stratton, on October 2, 1983 in a shop which she rented from her friend.
“I can still remember my first customer. She bought a skirt and a blouse and she was a customer until she died. Things were different back then you didn’t have the internet or eBay and supermarkets didn’t sell clothes. Catalogues were our only competition.”
The Long Stratton shop closed in 2010 and over the past 30 years the couple, who live in Forncett, have had shops in Attleborough, Harleston and Bungay.
66, and Mr Dennis, 67, plan to spend more time focusing on amateur dramatics, walking and gardening.
“I’m not retiring, I’m pulling back,” the mother of one said. “I have worked since I left school in 1962. We are not youngsters any more and our energy levels are not as high.”
Ms Spillings thanked Sylvia Towlard, who has worked in the shop since it first opened in 1985.
“We were fitting the shop out and she was eating her lunch on the market cross and she came over and asked if we needed any staff. She is now 70 so we have grown old together.”
